USE OF AGRICULTURAL FARM FLOTATION (IMPLEMENT) TIRES IN EARLY DUNE BUGGIES- L'USO DELLE GOMME AGRICOLE DI GALLEGGIAMENTO SULLE PRIME DUNE BUGGY

Dune Buggy started their era as poor and simple toys. That's the reason why first part of their career as trend phenomenon is so fascinating in my opinion. They were build with scrap parts, new parts, fantasy parts, salvaged parts. They were often custom built and cheap, easy for all to be done and used. Nowadays we have paddle tires, Subaru engines, long travel suspension but we are not happier than in the sixties, when they could play with 4 scraps and a big joy, putting togheter very cool cars. Speaking of tires, the very first dune buggies generally used on the front stock road productions, very slim 5.60 from the original VW or similar, but sometimes muscle cars sporty tires too.
THERE IS NO VINTAGE DUNE BUGGY WITH MODERN TIRES, but there are no problems: we can find both categories of tire in the modern shops of vintage tires, with a big choice of brands, model, sizes. You can also use muscle car tires at the rear if you want to reproduce the correct road going set up of the period. The most tasty and typical look possible on a vintage dune buggy is however putting Agricultural tires on the rear axle.
This very common and cool choice has precise reasons.

Dune buggy were actually made first of all for sand. A sand a vehicle needs to float on the sand not to get stuck. farm Flotation tires are very near to airplane ones for round shapes and lines of design. they only have longitudinal ribs. They were made for agricultural trailers not to stop the tractor on soft freshly worked terrains. for this reason they are low pressure,(down to 0.5 atm, to be flatter on the road, increasing the surface on the ground: The more a tire offers inches to ground, the more it will float, on the same principles of snow shoes)and round shaped ( the more the car will sink, the more surface the shape will offer). They are mostly trailer tires, so they don't need to have a traction thread, but only cornering one: for this reason they have only longitudinal ribs. Result is that using them on traction dune buggy axle they don't dig the sand. You can think that for the same reason you could have no traction too. In part you are right. but you have to remember that first dune buggies hadn't got big amount of horsepowers, so was better for them to float than to move with instant acceleration. When power began to be increased, buggistas grooved trasversal ribs by hand with the hot knife tool.
There were no specialistic paddle tires for dune buggies in the sixties, so they had to invent, to test, to try and to use their fantasy, finding something suitable and ready made to drive on the sand. This is the exciting part of seeing an agricultural tire on an old dune buggy. They are a souvenir of an unadultered pioneering world. Then they look strange, and they are very big and large. Just what a large dune buggy fender needs to be filled to please the wiew. I choose these tires for my dune buggy without hesitating. Road going use is forbidden, but i use them a lot on the road too. They are rated for 35 mph maximum speed. I tried them at constant 60 mph on hot summer highway. They remain fresh, and beacause they are soft they keep the road great on cornering. In my opinion they are very good for a swing axle setup because they can follow camber variations during suspension travel. they are round and they keep always the same amount of surface on the road without going on the corner of tread, simply beacuse the tread has no corners. I tried them with satisfaction even on on a low speed racetrack!! They won't stay in the law, but they will do the work!! Remember i am not suggesting you to be an outlaw like me. If you choose to use agricultural tires on the road try them first. Remember to feel the temperature often on first drives. You can purchase your flotation tire at your favourite tire shop, especially if you live in an agricultural zone. They are cheap, and still the same of 40 years ago. They are strong (10 plies)and they are near to be "punctureproof" because they are built for heavy loads that a simple car could never put on them. They have tall walls (31 inches of diameter for the most common 15 inch size)so they help the susension works.
for this reason period offroader (not only buggy owners) used them for a long period on every kind of terrain and in every kind of offroad car.
