BURRO BUGGY

WITH THE HELP OF BURROBUGGY.COM

The EMPI Sportster and the BURRO by Hilder Tiny Thompson were the very first try to dress that preistoic kind of buggies that people began to do at the end of the fifties. Both models were just pioneer in doing something that prepared field for the Manx explosion: they were an early try to do dune buggies in small series production. Both of them are not a beauty when u tasted the Manx, but they are important and fascinating. We are in the very early sixties and dunes of Pismo beach, Glamis, Silver Lake and Cape cod are already full of Modified Volkswagen frames that immediately proved to be faster and lighter than the american based buggies. They jump here and there with elegance and agility. They look odd and homemade, very often even without a real try of bodywork. Without a body a dune buggy can't go out of the dunes. Stricly and technically speakin, but generally speaking too. The Phenomen needs something to finish that car better to explode definitly. A dune buggy without a protection can't go to the rocks, but first of all can't move on the street. To dress this creature Empi and burro were ready in 1960-61. Empi company did its Sportster for utility and roadgoing. with its strong steel body the Sportster was suitable for turistic use, but for offroad too, ideal to hunt and fish. Burro Was definitely more sporty. it has a birdcage tubolar frame in role of Volkswagen shoetened platformof the Empi. The Burro was lighter and shorter and has a siple bodywork of aluminum sheets screwed to the frame. Burro is just a cult dune buggy. it has a strange look with a 80 inches wheelbase, but it is very efficient. a real offroad car!!
