They are all crying for absence of Gates tyres. I can imagine if someone could reproduce them, numbers would be interesting. Not only the buggies, but all offroad cars of an era sported this kind of tyres. They vere aggressive loookig, correct choice of sizing, great in the rocks, nice in the sand, rated for street speeds.

Tutti piangono per l'assenza delle gomme Gates Commando. Posso immaginare che se qualcuno dovesse riprodurle, sarebe destinato a godere di una nicchia di successo.
Non solo le dune buggy, ma tutti i veicoli fuoristrada di una intera generazione le indossavano. Avevano un look molto aggressivo, una buona scelta di misure, erano magnificamente performanti su tutti i terreni: sabbia, terra, rocce. Erano adatte anche alle velocita' strdali. un must.

Red flags are for group fun. They are on a long antennas for seeing cars among the dunes, eliminating the risk of jumping on each other. My flag is done with a low budget fiberglass fishing rod, the corner of a red silk sleeve and a two pieces base on pre-heater . base remain always n the car. antenna is removable, remember never to use carbon fiber rods. Very,very dangerous choice.
le bandierine rosse sono per divertirsi in compagnia. Sono su di una lunga antenna per segnalare la presenza di una macchina tra le dune, evitando il rischio di saltarsi in testa a vicenda. La mia bandiera e' realizzata come ai vecchi tempi. Una canna da pesca in vetroresina molto economica, l'angolo di un vecchio fazzoletto di seta e una base in due pezzi attaccata al preriscaldatore. L'antenna e' separabile dal supporto, che rimane sempre montato sulla macchina. Ricordatevi di non usare mai canne in fibra di carbonio. Sono davvero pericolosissime.

CALL ME STUPID, BUT I LOVE THIS CAR. WE ARE FULL OF THESE LITTLE FIAT 500 IN ITALY...WHO KNOWS... MAYBE ONE DAY... CERTAINLY LEVEL OF QUALITY IS TO UPGRADE, BUT THE IDEA IS GOOD. WORKING ON FENDER LIPS COULD BECOME COMPACT AND AGGRESSIVE.

LA SPORTSTER E LA BURRO FURONO I PRIMI TENTATIVI DI VESTIRE I TELAI VOLKSWAGEN NUDI E MOLTO ROZZI CHE AVEVANO PRESO PIEDE TRA I PILOTI DELLA SABBIA CALIFORNIANI. LA FORMA TIPICA DEL DUNE BUGGY ERA ANCORA LONTANA A DEFINIRSI, MA CERTAMENTE IL SEME ERA GETTATO. LA CARROZZERIA DELLA SPORTSTER E' REALIZZATA IN LAMIERA.
THE SPORTSTER AND THE BURRO WERE FIRST TRIES TO DRESS NAKED AND UGLY VOLKSWAGEN FRAMES THAT SAND PILOTS WERE USED TO DRIVE IN THE DUNES. TYPICAL DUNE BUGGY IDEA WAS FAR TO COME. BUT THE SEED WAS THROWN.
RITROVAMENTO DA FIENILE: ATL EXPLORER 1 (1970)
Nella legnaia di vecchio ex rivenditore Volkswagen e' stata recuperata questa ATL, e comperata da un amico fraterno su mia segnalazione. Ci sono voluti dieci anni per convincere il proprietario a disfarsene, ma noi abbiamo tanta pazienza. A breve verra' smontata e ripristinata fino all'ultimo bullone. Si presenta in condizioni davvero sane ed originali al 100%.
La vettura e' corredata delle mezze porte superiori metalliche con vetri scorrevoli e della capote in tela canvas militare con relativa centina.
Il parabrezza e' abbattibile e le portierine a vento sono separabili in 5 secondi dalla carrozzeria per un uso fouristradistico.
La ATL (AUTOTECNICA DEL LARIO, che aveva sede a Mandello del Lario, il paese della Moto Guzzi) di Ercole Zuccoli e Giorgio Greppi ha prodotto questa vettura dal 1969 al 1972 in circa 80 esemplari.
Su disegno del Sig. Zuccoli, la Empi Sportster americana fu modificata per meglio soddisfare le esigenze degli inverni italiani. Il motore posteriore e' stato carenato e per la zona delle portiere e' stata prevista copertura asportabile.
Inoltre il telaio Volkswagen e' stato dotato di rinforzo.
il vano posteriore ha lo schienale posteriore a ghigliottina, traslabile verso i sedili anteriori per ottenere una sorta di piccolo "pick up"
La nostra ATL e' realizzata su telaio "ovale", di cui conserva tutta la meccanica, ad eccezione del motore, che e' un 34 cavalli montato al momento della trasformazione, e munito di firzione da 200mm per favorire gli impieghi gravosi.
Le marmitte sono realizzate sempre su disegno del Sig.Zuccoli e sono piu' alte per migliorare l'angolo di uscita.
BARN FIND: ATL EXPLORER 1 (1970)
In the barn of an old ex Volkswagen dealer we found this ATL EXPLORER 1, and it was bought by a very dear friend of mine. it took ten years for us to talk the owner into selling it, but we were very patient. Soon it will be taken all apart and restored to last screw. it is very dry and 100% complete and original.
It came with upper metallic half doors with sliding glasses and its first military canvas green soft top with its frame. It has flip windscreen and removable suicide doors, to get a real offroad version very quickly.
ATL was owned by Ercole Zuccoli and Giorgio Greppi, (AUTOTECNICA DEL LARIO) (LARIO IS THE SECOND NAME OF COMO'S LAKE) It was located in Mandello del Lario (MOTO GUZZI'S TOWN) and produced this car from 1969 to 1972 .( about 80 were sold.)
Mr. Zuccoli modified project of american Empi Sportster to get a vehicle to be suitable in Italian hard winters. Engine compartment was covered. door zone too was modified to have serious steel doors.
Rear cargo zone has a seat for two persons, and upper part of this seat is removable , to go just behind front seat for creating a small sort of "pick up".
The base for our ATL is an oval beetle, and all mechanical parts is untouched. only the engine was update to another, but 34 cv one, at the moment of the conversion.
clutch is 200 mm one, beacuse of the harder use in program. Exhaust designed by Mr. Zuccoli was higher than the original one, to get more ground clearence.
